SOMERVILLE, N.J. – Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor and Manville Borough Chief of Police Mark Peltack announced that an investigation is ongoing regarding an off-duty police officer shooting in Manville, New Jersey and the arrest of Tyreek Cook, age 19, of North 2nd Avenue, Manville, New Jersey.

Prosecutor Robertson stated that earlier this morning at approximately 12:07 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received by the Somerset County Communications Center, reporting a burglary in progress at a North 5th Avenue residence in Manville. Responding Manville Officers located a 19 year old male, subsequently identified as Tyreek Cook inside the residence, involved in a physical confrontation with the homeowner and suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. Manville Officers and the homeowner immediately initiated life-saving medical aid to defendant Cook, who was transported to a local trauma center for emergency treatment. The homeowner, whom authorities have only identified as an off-duty police officer, was also transported to a local hospital for examination of injuries sustained during the physical encounter with defendant Cook and traumatic stress related physical conditions.
Prosecutor Robertson stated that detectives from the Manville Police Department, along with detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, and the Crime Scene Investigations and Forensics Unit responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. The investigation thus far has revealed that defendant Cook is suspected of committing and attempting to commit numerous residential and vehicle burglaries in the area. The investigation into defendant Cooks criminal activity is actively on-going.
Defendant Cook has been charged with third degree burglary and was listed in critical condition under police guard at the trauma center.
Prosecutor Robertson, Chief Fodor and Chief Peltack request anyone with information regarding this incident or recent residential or vehicle burglaries within the Manville area to contact the Somerset County Prosecutors Office Major Crimes Unit at (908) 231-7100, the Manville Police Department (908) 725-1900 or the Somerset County Crime Stoppers’ Tip Line at 1-888-577-TIPS (8477) or online at www.888577tips.org or www.scpo.net and click on either “Crime Stoppers” or “TIPS HOTLINE”.
